Going Beyond Our Borders
Angola is one of the largest of the fifty-one countries that make up the great continent of Africa. It has seen over 30 years of war and torment. Fighting among the tribes has resulted in millions of deaths, the spread of disease and the destruction of villages, churches and healthcare facilities. Recently a window of opportunity has opened in Angola for Christians to enter in again and continue the Lord’s work, bringing about restoration and the rekindling of hope for the people.
Franklin Graham, the president of Samaritan’s Purse, an organization that provides relief to war torn countries, has just built a hospital in the city of Lumbongo, Angola. The need for medical attention is great and the people are many. Along with providing healthcare, the opportunity to share the gospel is right at hand. Physically attending to their needs and then sharing with them the love and salvation of Christ is the eternal gift we have the privilege to share in.
I had the honor to speak with Dr. Foster, a missionary in Angola, the last time I was over in Africa. We spoke about the joy of having a missionary hospital established and about its continuing demands. After discussing the urgent needs and some of the logistical problems of the area, he shared with me the need for a clinic closer to the villages. You see, transporting patients from surrounding villages can be up to nine hour drive to Lumbongo which in some cases could result in death. Let alone the high probability of terrorist and land mine risks. Right then I decided I wanted to have a greater contribution to this country.
There is hope. Now armed with a Cessna plane and old but good bricks left in Angola from a destroyed communist building, Dr. Foster and his team can bring in supplies which would enable them to build and staff a new clinic. “Two doctors and six nurses should be a good start”, he says. Setting up a medical clinic in the middle of the jungles filled with war, with next to no way in or out sounded like the perfect scenario to see God do the miraculous. A Christian clinic built of communist bricks? Let’s do it!
It takes a lot to get something this big started and supported. A long time ago I started going beyond our borders taking music into war torn countries with Billy and Franklin Graham. Now, alongside with the Russia coffeehouse support that I’m involved with, I have decided to be an avid contributor to Dr. Foster’s clinic there in Angola. The world is in dire need for a savior and surprisingly ready to hear the good news. Some of us are called to be out in the fields and some of us are called to provide the ability for them to be there. You can be a part of this harvest too. By coming along side with me, together we can help the Angola people receive the medical care they so desperately deserve.
For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God has prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10
